A breathtaking place, Reviewed to be the calmest place one could visit in the Northern Tanzania Safari Circuit . About five (5) to six (6) hour drive from Arusha town, a challenging trip, with some amazing landscape scenarios. travelers drive through the Lake Natron Game Control Area, an area with plenty of wildlife, heading towards Engarasero, the Masai village that host Lake Natron & Oldoinyo Lengai.
Oldoinyo Lengai which translates to “The Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, the perfect description to how unique this area is. The summit of this strato-volcano is 2962 meters above sea level, and affords direct views into the caldera of Tanzania’s only officially-certified active volcano, and the world’s only carbonatite volcano. Surrounded by Masai communities, Waterfalls & high mountain ridges stretching to Ngorongoro highlands.
Complemented by Lake Natron, a mythical soda lake at the base of the active Oldoinyo Lengai volcano, often described as having a desolate and almost lunar beauty. With over 1.5-2.5 million Lesser Flamingos, representing three-quarters of the world population of which most of them hatch at Lake Natron. Food is plentiful, nesting sites abound – and above all, the lake is isolated and undisturbed. The lake and its ecosystem provides a source of livelihoods to the local communities.

The day starts at 8 am, where you will be picked up at your accommodation in Arusha & drive to the nearest supermarket for a daily recap & shopping ahead of your trip to Lake Natron. The drive starts, driving to Longido, North of Arusha town via the Arusha-Namanga Highway. With Kilimanjaro view on this route, you then will turn West and drive to Kitumbeine, a small Masai village on route to Lake Natron. Picnic lunch on this day, anywhere cool & wild, as you will be expected to arrive in Lake Natron at 2 to 3 pm in the afternoon. Your first day activity starts on this day. A trip to the waterfalls or a walk in the lake as you get ready for a night hike at Mount Oldoinyo Lengai. Hiking Mount Oldoinyo Lengai starts at 10 pm at night. Hiking up to the top may take 5 to 6 hours. You will be guided & are expected to decent at 11 am in the morning of Day 2. The Hike reviewed to be spectacular & demanding, travelers are recommended to take all precaution on this hike & prepare well.
Depending on the night before, Day 2 starts. You will be expected to explore Engarasero & its people. Some clients after hiking Mount Oldoinyo Lengai do request a 2 hour rest on this day. Some go straight to exploring the villages, waterfalls and walk in Lake Natron. For sure this day is tailored to your liking. However you will be expected to leave Engarasero by 3pm to 4pm. This is because the permits on the two day experience are booked for a 24 hour experience. We feel this satisfies the feel of seeing this unique place. Arriving at Arusha town at 9 pm in the evening.
The package budget is set for a Two (2) days, One night experience. Please let us know if you wish to explore this area with more days. This however will have an additional fees due to Entry fees regulations
The activities in this area are as follows, Waterfalls walk, A hike on Mount Oldoinyo Lengai & a walk in Lake Natron. All this activities are guided tours, you will be required to have a guide with you.
We have the experience of starting this tour at five (5) pm in the evening on Day 1, leaving Arusha at this time means you will arrive at Lake Natron at Nine (9) pm at night. Some clients have chosen this, which means they start hiking Mount Oldoinyo Lengai as soon as they arrive. We however do not recommend this. The latest this package can end is at Eleven (11) pm of Day Two (2).
We selected Lake Natron Africa Safari Glamping or any similar accommodation, due to its unique location & budget. which may match the same budget as ordinary camping or budget accommodation at Lake Natron. With exceptional service.
