The Serengeti ecosystem, situated in northern Tanzania, is home to the West and North Serengeti. This expansive area encompasses a variety of landscapes, including grasslands, woodlands, and riverine areas.

The migration is a year-round process, driven by the need for fresh grazing and water sources. The movement occurs in a circular pattern, covering approximately 1,200 miles (1,930 kilometers) each year.As the migration progresses northward, the herds encounter various obstacles, including rivers. The Grumeti River crossing, usually taking place between June and July, is a breathtaking spectacle as thousands of wildebeest attempt to navigate the treacherous waters while avoiding lurking crocodiles.

The climax of the migration unfolds at the Mara River, typically from July to September, where massive herds face the formidable task of crossing the crocodile-infested river. This event is both a perilous and captivating display of nature’s raw power.By September, the herds reach the northern Serengeti, an area renowned for its abundance of wildlife. Here, the wildebeest continue to graze and seek out fresh pastures.
