Overview

Mt. Meru, Tanzania’s second highest mountain standing tall at 4,566m & located in Arusha National Park. Offers some of the most spectacular scenery and wildlife diversity of any mountain in Tanzania. Mt. Meru, a challenging trek due to its steepness, regarded as great way to acclimatize before attempting Mt. Kilimanjaro. Climbers are accompanied by an armed ranger due to the abundance of wildlife on the lower slopes.

Much of its bulk was lost about 7,800 years ago due to a summit collapse. Creating an Ash Cone which can be viewed by hikers who explore this unique landscape. The most recent minor eruption was in 1910. The several small cones and craters seen in the vicinity probably reflect numerous episodes of volcanic activity. Mount Meru’s caldera is 2.2 miles (3.5 km) wide.

Mount Meru is the topographic centerpiece of Arusha National Park. Its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savanna and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including nearly 400 species of birds, and also monkeys and leopards. The hike to the top gives a good balance between walking safaris & hiking the mountain.
