The Marangu Route is one of the most popular routes for trekking Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route” due to the availability of Coca-Cola at the huts along the way, Marangu is often chosen by those seeking a relatively comfortable and straightforward ascent
Marangu Route offers hut accommodations, providing a more comfortable experience compared to camping on other routes.Proper acclimatization is crucial to increase the chances of a successful summit.Weather conditions on Kilimanjaro can vary, so it’s essential to be prepared for different climates.
Overall, the Marangu Route is well-suited for those who prefer a more comfortable trekking experience with hut accommodations, and it is considered less strenuous than some of the other routes on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Our team will pick you up from your accommodation at 9 am in the morning. A quick drive to Kilimanjaro Marangu gate to start your hike.
Starting Point: Marangu Gate (1,860 meters / 6,102 feet)
Ending Point: Mandara Hut (2,700 meters / 8,858 feet)
Hiking Time: About 4-6 hours
The trek begins through dense rain-forest, with a gradual ascent. Mandara Hut is a cluster of basic huts in a forest clearing, providing a comfortable first night's rest.
Starting Point: Mandara Hut
Ending Point: Horombo Hut (3,720 meters / 12,205 feet)
Hiking Time: Approximately 6-8 hours
The trail continues through the rain-forest, gradually giving way to heather and moorland. Horombo Hut, located on a plateau, offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Optional Acclimatization Hike: Towards Mawenzi Hut or Zebra Rock
Purpose: Helps with acclimatization to higher altitudes
It's essential to spend an extra day at Horombo Hut for acclimatization. You can take short hikes to aid in adjusting to the altitude, contributing to a safer ascent.
Starting Point: Horombo Hut
Ending Point: Kibo Hut (4,703 meters / 15,430 feet)
Hiking Time: Around 6-8 hours
The terrain becomes more rugged as you ascend to the barren lunar landscape. Kibo Hut is the last stop before the summit and provides a crucial rest point.
Summit Attempt Start Time: Very early morning (usually around midnight)
Summit: Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters / 19,341 feet)
Descent: Kibo Hut to Horombo Hut
Hiking Time: Up to 12 hours for the summit and descent
The ascent to Uhuru Peak is challenging, especially during the night. The descent to Horombo Hut allows for rest after the summit achievement.
Starting Point: Horombo Hut
Ending Point: Marangu Gate
Hiking Time: Approximately 6 hours
The final descent takes you through the rain-forest, completing the trek at Marangu Gate. You'll receive your summit certificate at the gate, celebrating the successful climb.
